Trees

Vast areas of the earths surface were covered in primeval forests.

Throughout the early stages of mankind we can trace back that trees were thought of as sacred to man.

One of the earliest forms of religion is said to have been tree-worship where mans primary satisfaction of his spiritual needs was fulfilled.

The pine tree was sacred to Adonis, Attis and Osiris, ancient gods of vegetation and fertility.

For every victor at the Olympic games their crown was made from branches of the sacred olive tree that grew in the temple of Zeus .

Babylonian kings had the title ‘Gardener of the Sacred Tree’.

Biblical references include:

Then God said, “I give you

every seed-bearing plant on the face

of the whole earth and every tree

that has fruit with seed in it. They

will be yours for food. And to all

the beasts of the earth and all the

birds of the air and all the creatures

that move on the ground –

everything that has breath of life in

it – I give every green plant for

food.” And it was so.

Genesis 1:29

The LORD appeared to Abraham

near the great trees of Mamre

while he was sitting at the entrance to

his tent in the heat of the day.

Genesis 18:1

Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba ,

and there he called upon the name

of the LORD, the Eternal God.

Genesis 21:33

He who dwells in the shelter

of the Most High will rest

in the shadow of the Almighty.

Psalm 91:1

The oak was held sacred by the British during Caesar’s time and everything that grew upon it including the mistletoe. Mistletoe itself was considered sacred. When gathered with a golden sickle was not allowed to touch the ground when harvested otherwise it might lose its magical powers.

The Christmas tree is considered a survivor of tree-worship.

Egypt , Greece , Rome through to Capability Brown we can see not just the spiritual but aesthetic and utilitarian needs placed on trees by man.

What is the attraction?

Strength, beauty, power, greatness, long-living or shelter, protection, comfort?

Whatever the reason trees can be a delightful addition to any garden, large or small. Obviously the larger the garden the more space you have available to enjoy them.

A tree or shrub belongs to the owner of the land on which it grows, that includes its branches or roots if they go over or under adjoining land.

Never buy a tree until you have checked what height it is likely to grow to in about 10 years time.

Unfortunately when people move into new properties they cannot choose what trees are already in the garden, how much maintenance, pruning, training etc., of the tree has been carried out over the years.

Due to damage on peoples houses insurance companies have paid out considerable amounts for broken pipes, subsidence etc., the insurance companies and surveyors have tables of safe distances a tree should be planted from the house, some are far too cautious e.g. Willow 40m from a house, but if you bear in mind:-

  1. Cost of repairs
  2. Reduction in value of house
  3. Possible loss of sale of house
  4. Legal costs

it does make you think twice, or should, before selecting your specimen.
